Communicating with Sketches

As the year comes to a close, BPD is taking some time to clean-up, organize, and get ready to hit the ground running in 2015. A few sketches turned up during this process that inspired us to share a little about how we communicate throughout the design process.View Planning Diagram

We consider ourselves to be very graphic people, relying on sketches and worksheets to communicate our thoughts visually. These drawings are typically very simple and generated quickly. Almost daily, we use hand prepared sketches as a tool to get feedback from our clients, fellow consultants, and various project stakeholders. Based on responses, we can then move forward with honing in on a final, more refined design. Our approach is to present design thoughts both graphically and in writing to accommodate the entire team. Whether they are bubble diagrams, grading worksheets, or conceptual site plans, the sketches that we produce tell a story when paired with a written description.

Good communication is key to creating a successful project and makes it much easier for everyone to stay on the same page throughout the process. As you can see, these are not intricate or detailed designs. In most cases, we spent less than an hour creating them.
